I've had my KitchenAid 4.5 qt mixer for 8 years and love it! I am a cake decorator, so I use it a lot for mixing cakes and icing. It also does an excellent job of mixing double batches of cookie dough. I have started making homemade yeast bread a few times a week lately and I love using my dough hook to knead the dough. I barely get my hands messy since I don't knead by hand anymore.

I keep wondering how long my machine will last with the way I abuse it, but it just keeps going! If I ever wear this out, I will definitely get another one, perhaps the larger one as this one barely holds three cake mixes.

They seem costly, but my Mom went through two lesser mixers of another brand in less the time that I have had my KitchenAid. Replacing multiple cheap mixers will add up quickly. This is one item that is definitely worth the money!

The machine functioned well, but the package condition upon receipt was very unsatisfying.

1.Styrofoan inside the package was partly damaged.
2.The cake mixer sample included was apparently cut open by a sharp object; the flour and sugar was all over the place inside the box and on the machine (including the gap, the motor).
3.Scratches were found on the surface of the Mixer.

This item might not have been used, but was apparently not in brand new condition. I didn't want to spend time looking for packing material or else I would have returned it if the styrofoan was intact.

->Best Price KitchenAid K45SS Classic 250-Watt 4-1/2-Quart Stand Mixer, White

I'll fess' up, I bought this mixer because I think it looks cool. However let there be no doubt it meets performance as well as aesthetic expectations. I use it to knead dough for bread and pasta, and also put the pasta attachment (a separate purchase) to very good use; in fact just this evening I used it to mix the ingredients for chocolate chip and peanut butter brownies, which have all since mysteriously disappeared.

Perhaps the only gripe I have is the speed control, which is a horizontal latch situated along the top of the mixer. As it turns out, you need to gently push down on it before adjusting to a different speed, otherwise its locked in place. Perhaps this is in the directions (which I of course never read), however it took quite a bit of time (and straining) before i figured this out.

All said, I couldn't imagine a better mixer.

We made home-made bread and pizza dough with such little effort. The dough turned out perfectly. We were so impressed.

It seems a little over-kill for smaller mixing, like quickly mixing egg yolks, so you need to keep a hand mixer in my opinion, but this is great for the big jobs.

I really like this mixer! I make my own bread, so it gets a lot of use with the dough hook & it works wonderfully. The manual says that I would have to knead for about 8-10 minutes, but this thing is so awesome that it only takes like 5 minutes. The only thing I don't like too much is that I have to scrape the sides of the bowl after a few minutes of kneading. The manual said I would rarely have to do it, but I have to do it every time or my bread won't turn out right. With that said I still give it 5 stars & I would recommend to anyone!

We always make tons of cookies during the Christmas season, and it has always been exhausting. This year we invested in this inexpensive but top-rated (Consumer Reports) stand mixer and it transformed the whole experience. We ended up making a few extra batches here and there to suit some preferences, it was not so much a savings in time, but in our own energy. This mixer is the best. It has more expensive brothers in the same line, but they are just more expensive, not better mixers. I heartily recommend this mixer.

I didn't realize that the bowl does not have a handle, plus the low wattage leaves a lot to be desired for mixing basic things like thick cookie dough. With the handled bowl being so expensive as a separate order item, - and you WILL want the handle -it's worth it to just get the 450 watt model with the handled bowl and pouring shield.

I use this machine primarily for kneading bread dough, one loaf at a time. It is barely able to accomplish the job: at higher speeds it will dance right off the counter if you don't restrain it, the pivot pin that holds the head to the base tends to work its way out making it possible for the head to fall off, the bowl which is held in place by a tapered friction fit around the bottom rim becomes so tight that it almost can't be removed from the machine - I have to place the entire machine on the floor and hold it down with my feet so I can wrench it loose with both hands....it's just not a good bread machine! For the lighter duty tasks like those you might use a good hand held mixer for it works very well....

This machine will handle anything you throw at it, from whipping cream, mixing chocolate chip cookie dough w/ nuts, to really stiff bread dough. The best part about this machine is it's weight, therefore it is not going to dance all around your counter like those cheap plastic ones do, and the elliptical motion on the paddles make sure every inch of the bowl gets mixed together! This machine is something I use on a regular basis, and I don't hide it away either - the classic design is something to be displayed. Well worth the money!

I'm not a professional baker, culinary chef or anything close, however; I use my mixer on a regular basis. The dough hook actually comes in handy to mix ingredients for meatloaf! The only downfall I have ever experienced with this mixer is the fact you frequently have to raise the mixer to make sure all ingredients in the bottom are blended. This was my "saving grace" at Christmas time baking so many different types of cookies and quick breads! I do not have any of the attachments for it except the splatter shield (a must have,) and the chute (another smart investment). The wire whip makes whipping up home made cheese cake a breeze! I have used other mixers trying to mix cream cheese and other stiff ingredients and have not been satisfied with their results. This is by far, a great choice for the price. I have had my mixer 7 years now, and wouldn't trade it for anything!

The mixer I grew up with was a Mixmaster...and when I became an adult, I bought and used Mixmasters...plural. They kept dying! They are cheaply made nowadays, not like Mom's old workhorse.

I got to know KitchenAid first in the massive industrial size, in a school kitchen, baking large quantities for 100 people. Then I got to know KitchenAid home (nonprofessional) mixers because my sister got one, and we were doing some baking together. I decided I liked it. As soon as I had enough money to spare, I bought one for myself. This entry-level model is enough for most households.

(I use a bread machine to bake bread or prepare bread doughs for hand finishing, so I have never used my KitchenAid for kneading bread doughs. If you knead bread doughs frequently, you might want to get a higher level model with a more powerful motor.)

Mostly, I use the KA for baking cakes and cookies. I try not to bake a lot for myself, because I don't need the weight gain. But I love baking and am really a master at it, so I look for excuses to bake...as holiday gifts, to take to the office, or to church or parties. The KA does a great job at perfectly preparing cake and cookie batters/doughs. Also, pancake, waffle, and muffin batters--but don't let the machine run too long, it's very efficient, and muffin batters should just be moistened, not thoroughly blended, or they turn out "flat" and tough. If you are following a recipe or directions on a box, estimate a shorter mix/blend/whip time, because this machine works a lot quicker than most directions allow for.

The whipping beater is really excellent at whipping cream or egg whites. When making waffles, or lady fingers, or madeleines, start with the KA whipping beater, then remove the bowl and fold in the remaining dry ingredients with a spatula, gently, until you don't see flour any more; don't overstir. That keeps the air bubbles in your superlight, airy batter for these types of whipped batters. It sounds complicated? Nah. The KA makes easy work out of such things. Don't be afraid, give it a try.

I used to make mashed potatoes from a box, but since getting a KA mixer, I have switched to making real mashed potatoes, because it's easy to mash using the KA.

I've bought a lot of attachments but not bothered to learn them, I really must get around to tinkering with them!

I wish I would have waited and saved up more to buy a KA mixer in a pretty color--the pink Susan G. Komen fundraiser model is fabulous...and lavendar. So, now I'm looking for the first excuse possible to order a pretty one in a neat color! I am totally satisfied with this entry level model, and it is great for most households. I just want a neat color, and that requires moving up to the Artisan 5 qt. model. (The attachments I have will work with any size KA mixer, they are universal.)

KA is known for its workhorse motors that last forever. I also have a five-speed hand mixer, and the five-cup food processor. I am totally satisfied with the high quality of KA appliances. They are definitely worth it! Skip the cheapie brands that have a short lifespan. Wait, save up, buy KA. (I am NOT a paid endorser! LOL)

I bought mine at W**-M***, but Amazon's kitchen promotions and free shipping, plus occasional KA rebates, make ordering from Amazon very sensible. Go ahead and comparison shop on price, and you'll probably conclude the same thing.

I love my mixer. I bought it five years ago after wanting one for about twenty years. I bought it at Christmas time and was inspired to make loads and loads of cookies which turned out beautifully and perfectly mixed. That baby could mix up a giant batch of gingerbread in what seemed like seconds! If you have ever mixed a gingerbread recipe by hand, you'll know why I'm so excited about it! It incorporated five cups of flour with no effort. WOW! Now, I know that one lady who reviewed this mixer before gave it only two stars for the motor and the warranty, but possibly she got a lemon. I don't use mine for bread very often, because I was brought up baking bread and kneading the dough by hand, but perhaps if it is used every day, the motor would wear a tad. I know that I've always been happy with mine and I use it often. I love the way it looks on the counter and it's extremely easy to clean. The bowl, dough hook and paddle are all dishwasher safe. The only hand wash item is the wisk, which is no big deal. The body with the motor wipes clean in a snap and it's always easy to whip together a recipe in no time. I love it and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new stand mixer.

That's good for not bouncing around on the counter, but I have to move mine from the pantry to the counter, and it is extremely heavy. 2) I do not think that it mixes ingredients well. I always have to scrape the sides and get under the dough because there is often unmixed flour at the bottom. 3) My kids (5 and 7 years) like my old-fashioned MixMaster because they can see through the clear bowl and enjoy watching the ingredients mix. The KitchenAid has a metal bowl that is obviously not see-through and has to be hand washed. 4) The beaters must be hand washed. 5) Reaching into the bowl is a task, unless you don't mind being covered in batter. The bowl is narrower at the top, so there is not much room to get a spatula between the sides of the bowl and the beater. 6) Adding ingredients while the mixer is going is also a pain because of the narrow shape of the bowl. 7) You can get a splash-guard sort of plastic device through which to pour wet or dry ingredients. But why should I need a device for a mixer? There should be room enough to pour ingredients directly in. Also, then I have to store these plastic pieces, and they do not fit into the mixer.

My mother says she likes making bread with her KitchenAid which I haven't tried. But for making cookies, cakes, mashed potatoes, etc., I would not recommend the KitchenAid.

It blows my mind that so many people have bought into this mixer with its many inconveniences. I just pulled out the KitchenAid to give it one more try making cookies and was again disappointed. Next time, I'll stick to my cheap old MixMaster. Besides, my 2 girls each get to enjoy a beater a-piece with that one!

->Lowest Price KitchenAid K45SS Classic 250-Watt 4-1/2-Quart Stand Mixer, White

It's not just the creme de la creme of mixers, it's the only one you should ever own. If you're new to Kitchenaid, I know what you're thinking. "Gee, this is a really expensive mixer! Why would I want to pay this much when I can easily get one of a hundred other brand mixers for 50 bucks?" It's simple -- there is a reason why in every movie or television show containing a kitchen scene, you'll see a KitchenAid mixer somewhere. It's not just slick product placement. It's the simple fact that there is nothing, and I mean NO OTHER MIXER that even comes close to being of the quality and durability that even the most CASUAL user would need!
For example: I discovered baking when I was 8 years old and would haul my mother's mixer out of the bottom cabinet on a regular basis to make some increasingly divine concoction. This passion for baking continued the 10 additional years I lived at home. During that time, we went through three mixers (motors burnt out) and more than a dozen new pairs of beaters (a real pain to order). For the price of all of this, we could have easily bought a KitchenAid, which I did -- as my first kitchen item in my 1st apartment at 18. I've been a KitchenAid owner for more than 10 years, and still on my original mixer and beaters! [grin] And . . . did I mention it mixes better and more thourough and it's easier to clean? Yep! What more could you want?
REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE REPORT ON FEATURES:
MIXING: A big plus with a single flat beater vs a double beater is it's WAY easier to clean! But does it mix thoroughly, yep! With its unique "67-point Planetary Mixing Action" the single beater is spiraled around "to 67 different touch-points within the bowl for quick, complete mixing." I assure you, my old ones never did that! The single beater is 100% effective for mixing along the sides and the bottom of the bowl without additional scraping. If you find that yours is not mixing completely down on the bottom or sides, you may need to do a one time adjustment to the little screw that will raise or lower the mixing assembly ever so slightly to get the beater to just touch the bottom of the bowl.
ADJUSTING THE CLEARANCE: There are very simple and easy to follow instructions to do this in the manual but if you tossed yours, here's how you do it:
Pace the mixer in the `unlocked' position and raise the mixer head. There is a screw in the `neck joint' of the unit. This is the screw that adjusts the height of the beaters. Unplug the mixer first! and then turn the screw a 1/4 to half turn counterclockwise to raise the beater OR a 1/4 to half a turn clockwise to lower the beater. If you have over-adjusted the screw then the head will not lock back so try turning the screw only 1/4 turn at a time. If you want to know if you have made a correct adjustment without filling the bowl with your next recipe, you can put a dime into the empty bowl, put the flat beater in, and turn the mixer on a very low setting. The beater should move the dime 1/4 - 1/2 inch each time it rotates around the bowl. If it does, your mixer beater is now at the exact clearance mix everything at the bottom and sides of the bowl but not so low that the beater will wear out from coming into constant contact with the bottom. I made an adjustment upward because the bottom tip of my beater had a slighly `rubbed' look after a few uses and a 1/4 turn was all I needed. Have your husband do this so he will feel helpful.
MOTOR: No burnout! Even the motor of this model is extremely powerful; I've never needed to use speeds 9 or 10 -- even for beating egg whites to stiff peaks! I only turned it up to 10 (it doesn't go to 11) just once for fun. Whoooo! Watch it go! It actually blew my hair back when I did. A woman who owns a successful restaurant in my home town told me that you would only need the larger motor version if you used your mixer professionally or frequently made double batches of bread dough. This one is perfect for even heavy home use. The bowl locks into place and although I'm not ignorant enough to leave it running unattended on the countertop, it's so heavy that it won't vibrate off the countertop while I'm performing other kitchen duties. However, it always does such a thourough mixing job -- and quickly too -- that I find I rarely need to leave it at all. In fact, I find that it mixes thoroughly enough that there's no need to mix most recipe ingredients for the full time recommended by a recipe.
ACCESSORIES: The `splash guard' has been appropriately named "Pouring Shield." Flour will still pouf up a bit when added while the beater is running but the mess is greatly lessened and kept off of you. I wouldn't run the mixer without it. You'll have to toss a bit of flour onto your face yourself so your family will know all the `hard work' you've been up to in the kitchen. The pouring shield provides an easy place to add ingredients. What a bonus.
NOISE LEVEL: Yep, it's quiet.
PRICE: It's WORTH IT but keep checking Amazon.com for a sale price on some of the more common colors. They often go on sale for only one day at a time before going back up to regular price again and with Amazon.com's free shipping, you can often get it for much less here than elsewhere.

PS, my grandmother willed me the one she owned for more than 40 years so now I have a black one and a white one. Both, I'm sure will last long enough to put in my own will.

Have never heard a bad word about Kitchenaid stand mixers until I read one here from someone using the smallest mixer for big chores. In the last two years I have purchased a total of 14 Kitchenaid mixers, from the classic to the 6 quart professional model...all on sale. They were purchased for gifts for my daughters, church members, choir director and friends. I bought 7 Classic models, 4 Heavy Duty models 2 Artisans and the 6 quart professional for myself. I have not received one negative comment. When you purchase a Kitchenaid, do not purchase it by bowl size...you must purchase it based on the motor size for the jobs you do. If you are constantly mixing bread and double batches of very heavy dough, you should purchase a mixer with a heavy duty motor. This information is found on the Kitchenaid website. The company clearly tells you what each mixer is capable of doing. I know women who have had these mixers since they were brides 25 years or more ago...they are still up and running. They are an investment like good knives and heavy cookware...no real cook should be without one, but should be smart enough to buy the right one. I only wish I had one when I started baking 43 years ago, maybe I wouldn't have tendonitis from mixing all those cookies by hand with a wooden spoon!!! They are worth every penny.

About 4 years ago the newer versions of this mixer came out, and being a technology nut, I wanted the newer ones, but of course, my husband won't agree to it until mine croaks. But it just isn't croaking, and I suppose I'm stuck with it for the rest of my life!

This thing can do anything. I haven't ever had so much fun baking in my life. I love making bread, but i didn't do it as often because of all the mixing and hard work. The mixer does all of the work, the dough hook is so awesome. I've tried many other things with it too, like mixing salad dressings, waffles, pancakes, cookies, it will work for anything. Why does Kitchenaid take an obvious shortcomming and turn it into the opportunity to sell you something else. As any cook who has ever used one of these machines or even watched a TV program with someone using one of these machines can tell you, the bowl is too narrow. Its impossible to add ingredients without stopping the mixer and raising the beater. Unless you use some kind of device or don't mind spilling stuff all over.
I think that Kitchenaid could have redesigned their bowls with a flared edge along one side that would serve two purposes. It would allow ingredients to go in and allow easy pouring for ingredients to come out. But instead Kitchenaid saw it is a chance to makes a gizmo that fits the top of the bowl to get ingredients in. And hey they can shaft folks for more money at the same time.
I would also like to see the mixer shaft disengage when I am using the horizontal shaft for their attachments. And finally a better, more secure connection system for those attachments would be good.

When I bought the 4.5 quart size, I debated about getting the 5 quart, but couldn't justify the premium for only another 1/2 quart. I have mixed pound cakes and cookie dough with this one, and have yet to overflow the bowl. Sure, the level gets a lot higher than in a 6 quart model, but nothing the mixer can't handle. Also, it is small enough that I can keep it in a large cabinet, which is nice.

For years I had been cooking by using a great big bowl and a sturdy silver spoon to mix everything. I never realized the wonder of these KitchenAid mixers until I got one for myself. No longer do I have to struggle through thick doughs whether it be for bread, cookies, and pie crusts. My arms can have a rest while cooking and the KitchenAid does the work for me. It also helps conserve time, because while it is mixing, you can move to another spot of the kitchen and work on something else such as; getting the pie filling ready while the dough is mixing.
Anyone who finds themself using a spoon and a big bowl often to stir should round up some money to get one of these.

They come in different sizes, and many different colors such as black, white, and red. That way if you get one, you can get it to match your kitchen. It's easy to use as putting the ingredients in, plugging it in, and pressing a button.

You see these used on cooking shows time and time and again. Why not have a KitchenAid for yourself? If you cook a lot, or even just a little, you owe it to yourself.

It is costly, but really helps in the kitchen. The name practically says it all: it's a Kitchen Aid.

I bought my daughter-in-law this mixer for her birthday two years ago and after seeing it in action, I promptly bought another one for itself. This mixer is a powerhouse. You've never seen anything whip cream like this one; ditto egg whites. In fact, you have to keep an eye out for overbeating, because it does the job so fast and so thoroughly. The mixer comes with a flat beater for mixing cake batter, cookie dough and most other textures, a balloon whisk for whipping cream and beating egg whites to perfection, and a hook for kneading dough. The steel mixing bowl is solid and attaches securely to the base. You'll never have to worry about this machine sliding around the countertop; its weight and broad flat base insure that it isn't going anywhere. The attachments mentioned above twist very easily onto the beater shaft and I found unlocking them no problem. This is a solid, no-nonsense appliance that is a must in any kitchen. It's the gold standard of kitchen mixers.

I'm one of those lucky people who has a kitchen full of top-quality appliances because I love to cook. Over almost 50 years of preparing meals and catering parties for family and friends, I've worn out several mixers. When the last one gave out I decided to try the Kitchenaid. After all, the brand had produced a dishwasher that I loved and the mixer certainly seemed sturdy enough.

Actually "sturdy" is an understatement; this is the most rugged, most solid mixer I've ever owned. It attacks the heaviest ingredients with efficient dispatch and never "walks" on the counter. On the other hand, it can be gentle with more fragile ingredients and processes. Its versatility is amazing.

The machine itself is no lightweight -- too heavy to move around much so it really needs to be easily accessible on top of a counter. Fortunately it's attractive enough to keep in full view!

There's a locking mechanism that attaches the bowl firmly to the base so it won't move when you turn the motor on. The three mixing attachments lock in place with a slight twist and are easy to remove. The paddle attachment is great for mixing cake and cookie batters, whipping potatoes, and blending any combination of ingredients. The wire whip incorporates air into egg whites or other blends with an impressive efficiency and the hook makes quick work of yeast doughs. It's easy to shift the speed lever even when the machine is operating so the cook has complete control of the process.

If you love to cook and you have a limited budget you can't go wrong if you splurge on this mixer. This machine is a winner.

I have always wanted my own stand mixer. I have had the same hand held mixer since I was married and would admire kitchenAid mixers at the store. My husband surprised me this Valentine's Day with my KitchenAid K45SS Classic. The first thing I did was tear open the box and found a recipe. I made my very first cake without a mix! It took only minutes. Later I made 7 minute frosting that would have burned out the motor on my handheld mixer. While the wisk went to work, I did the dishes.

This mixer is the version of KitchenAid that lifts the head away to remove the beaters. The bowl sits on a round stand on the base. (Some larger units have a lift to move the bowl under the beaters.) At 250 watts and 4 1/2 quarts, in white, this is a mixer that fits most people's needs.

What this mixer does particularly well is tp prepare bread dough, using a dough hook that slaps the dough around the bowl, stretching it and beating it in an effective kneading motion. But if you are a cookie baker, this makes short work of the creaming stage where butter or other solid fat and sugar must be mixed together. The wire beater makes short work of eggwhites or whipping cream. Just remember to keep the bowl and beater free of any grease or oil when you do the egg whites.

In a way, the KitchenAid is a good substitute for a bread machine, doing everything but the unattended kneading, knock-down and loaf baking stages, which are pretty easy. I tend to make bread more in the KitchenAid than in the breadmaker because I prefer the freedom to make a round loaf, a braided loaf, rolls or heavier dough than a machine can handle. And for making cookie dough for Christmas or parties, this is a must. Five stars for this mixer.

I've had one of these, in Cobalt Blue, for years. It works very well and is very solid. The only complaint I have is that it's a little small; when kneading bread dough for a 1.5 lb. loaf, it tends to climb the dough hook. Aside from that, it's great.

->For Sale KitchenAid K45SS Classic 250-Watt 4-1/2-Quart Stand Mixer, White

I'd always wanted a KitchenAid stand mixer, but in the past they always seemed over my budget. I got by making batter by hand with a spoon, or with a small hand-held mixer that could handle single batches if the batter or cookie dough wasn't too thick.

Amazon recently reduced the price of the classic 250W mixer to fit my budget, and there was a nice rebate to boot. I use it about twice a week to make French bread, quick breads (like banana bread), cookies, and waffle batter. I've thrown in up to eight cups of bread flour and the dough hook kneads the mixture with ease. In three to five minutes I have perfectly kneaded dough, and eventually two huge loaves of French bread for less than $1 of ingredients.

There seems to be plenty of power to spare, and this is only their basic, "entry level" mixer. I don't make two double batches every day, but for the average, nonprofessional, occasional baker, it's all one would ever need. The unit is easy to clean, just wipe it down after use. It is quite heavy, over 25 pounds, so this is not an appliance to pull out of a cabinet when needed. Better to give it its own permanent home on the countertop. On the other hand, the mixer is sufficiently heavy that it won't "walk" along the counter when kneading heavy dough.

The unit and attachments are easy to clean. My only suggestion would be to put a handle on the bowl (one can buy an extra bowl with handle as an accessory) to make it easier to seat/unseat the bowl on the base. I'm considering buying an accessory three quart bowl, which should be more convenient to use when making a single batch. Other than our coffee maker, this has quickly become the most-used appliance in the kitchen!

I bought this when my friend took back her 5 qt. Ultra that I had on long-term loan. I had become dependent on the thing, you see! Alas, I could only afford the 250 Watt, 4 1/2 Cup version. What a disappointment!!! It barely holds a single small batch of cookie or bread dough, overheating & straining with that. Also, don't bother with buying a pour shield- Something about the shape of the 4 1/2 qt. mixing bowl sends everything up & out, unlike the bigger bowl on the more powerful version. (The pour shield is engineered with openings along the edge which allow the flour or liquids to still gush all over.) The mixing paddles & what-not don't mix the entire bowl on this version, either, so you have to do a bunch of stopping & scraping the sides which is unecessary with the bigger one. Pay more (try refurbished!)for the better one- you won't regret it.

I baked for years using just a hand-mixer. Finally succumbed to the lure of a stand-mixer a few months ago, and I've using it nearly every day since to make cakes and frostings. You won't believe how fast it whips egg whites to a stiff meringue!

KitchenAid has awesome warranty service, too. I broke my mixer grinding almonds with the grinder attachment, and they shipped me a replacement mixer, no questions asked. The UPS guy returned the day after delivering the replacement to pick up the broken mixer...it was fast and very convenient.

I had been coveting the larger KitchenAid mixers for a while, but I was not able to justify their price tag. The 4 1/2 quart mixer is perfect for a home hobbyist/cook such as me. It has a VERY powerful motor and has handled everything I have thrown at it with ease. The recipe booklet included with the mixer is great - the pie crust and cookie recipies were wonderful, and I have never had mashed potatoes as silky smooth as the ones whipped in the KitchenAid!!! This is a terrific mixer which makes many aspects of baking easier and faster, most notably creaming butter and whipping egg whites. It definately saves a lot of time and mess, as well as arm stregnth!

My only criticism of this mixer is that a fine dust of flour and other dry ingredients tends to blow out of the bowl as you first mix dry ingredients into liquid ones (even on low). The bowl shield on Kitchenaid's more expensive models prevents this, but with this model you must drape a dishtowel over the unit or mix the first few strokes by hand to keep your counter clean!

These mixers have mixed soft yeast doughs, without overheating, as some would have you believe. I also own the 9 speed K.A. portable mixer. It's a great product. It's unfair to blame K.A. stand mixers for consumer errors and lack of common sense. Knowing how to handle doughs is imperative. Abusing small appliances leads to false evaluation. I bake bread three times a week using a breadmachine dough cycle, then ovenbake. ->Purchase KitchenAid K45SS Classic 250-Watt 4-1/2-Quart Stand Mixer, White

Unlike many of the reviewers, I've only had this mixer for about a year, and it's this specific model, the 250W 4.5 quart mixer (the bottom of the Kitchenaid line). It was a real splurge at the time we purchased it, but it has turned out to be well worth it.

Before the Kitchenaid, I didn't do much baking. I tend towards more "manly" cooking techniques: the hotter the fire, the spicier the recipe, the better as far as I'm concerned. But this machine is as satisfying to use as any power tool in the garage -- there is something about using the *right* tool for the job, and I've found no tasks that one might consider using a mixer for that the Kitchenaid doesn't excel at. But it's especially good for baking, and once you start using it, you'll have your oven running a lot more than you used to.

The big difference between this mixer and the standard "two beater" models you may be familiar with is that it uses a single mixing attachment that rotates in two motions- it not only spins on its own axis, it also is rotated around the edge of the bowl. This does an extremely effective job of mixing ingredients without need for the bowl rotating, since the mixing motion covers the entire bowl. For most mixing jobs, it also requires no scraping of the sides with the spatula. IE: when it's mixing, you can ignore it and work on other stuff.

The first attachment I'll mention is the dough hook, which is a godsend for kneading. In the last day, I've made pizza dough, bagels, and whole wheat bread. Although this is the least powerful machine Kitchenaid makes, it kneads stiff dough (like the aforementioned bagels made with high-gluten flour) that would turn your mother's mixmaster into a smoking, stinking heap of fried motor components. Machine kneading takes a *lot* of the effort and variability out of making bread... you never "knead in" too much flour to keep it from sticking to your hands, and the 20 minutes you normally spend working the dough turns into 10 minutes you can use to clean up the kitchen.

The other two attachments are the paddle and the whisk. The paddle is the all-purpose "workhorse" beater, and works extremely well for creaming sugar and butter together, mixing cookie dough or cake batter, or any other general-purpose mixing job. With the orbital motion, it comes right up to the edge of the bowl, so it is effectively scraping as it goes. The whisk is great for egg whites and making whipped cream. I'm sure it's good for something else, but that's what I've used it for.

As for capacity, the 4.5 quart model is suitable for pretty much any "normal" home recipes. It's a "standard mixer". It will easily knead enough dough at once for two loaves of bread, or mix a double-batch of cookies.

As for downsides: this thing is HEAVY. You won't be moving it once it's in place. If you knead very stiff dough, the bowl sometimes will get tightened to the extent that it is very difficult to remove from the base. It's OK if you remember to leave it a little loose beforehand, but I always forget and I end up wrestling with the machine to twist it out. The metal trim band on the mixer right above the bowl has come a little loose on my model- the machine got a bit hot after some heavy kneading, and I think some adhesive got soft. It's held in place well by something else, but sometimes it will slip when I'm wiping the machine off. It's purely cosmetic from what I can tell, and it's the only thing that feels cheap in any way about this machine. Other than that, I honestly haven't had a single complaint.

In summary: this is an expensive mixer, but it is very well worth it. Even novice cooks will find it's use enjoyable, and it will inspire you to explore new things that you probably didn't do before because of the time and effort involved.

Like other reviewers, I just felt I had to add my kudos to Kitchen Aid for this appliance. Nowdays when so many appliances are lucky to last a year (include in that all toaster brands, hand held mixers, irons...where I haven't had one last more than nine months or do a half way decent job), my White Kitchen Aid mixer has outlasted and outdone all the other applianes in my house! Let alone my kitchen!

Kitchen Aid can be proud to produce and stand behind this product. With the seemingly chronic stupidity of corporate America at this point, it is nice to see one of these companies do something decent and something right. This appliance is one that should be given to every bride and groom. It can be used for both simple and complex recipes, for baking, for making omelets, grinding meats, etc. I have only had to replace one piece of it, and that was my fault.

This appliance is at least 10 years old, and yet it has the place of honor in my kitchen. I keep it out because I use it for so much, and I do not bake or cook as much as I did ten years ago prior to three degrees and with three children still needing to be made cookies for school and Scouts. It still looks as good as it did when I first got it, so I am not embarrassed to have it out on display.

A truly phenomenal piece of equipment!

I love my KitchenAid. I received it as a birthday gift for my 21st birthday. Here it is nearly 11 years later and it's still going strong. I have used my KitchenAid to make nearly everything from a wedding cake for 350 people to mashed potatoes, deviled eggs, thick buttercream icing - you name it! I heartily recommend KitchenAid to anyone looking for a sturdy, mixer for the average home kitchen.

I'm now looking to upgrade to an Empire Red 5 quart mixer but I really don't have a good excuse to spend the money since my original one is still working. :)

I have ordered reconditioned items frm Amazon and have been very happy and satisfied. Until I ordered this mixer, it came in a delapidated box, mixer looks used and dirty. The mixer bowl has scratches on it and dried icing stuck on the mixer arm. To make a long story short, it's a "BIG" disappointment! I have returned the item 2 weeks ago. Although I was impressed with the way Amazon had UPS pick up the item at no cost the very next day I notified them.

I bought my mother the 250 watt stand mixer and some attachments for Mother's Day. Both my mother and father (gasp) love the mixer. They have ground meat and made sausages and all kinds of other wonderful food. I had always wanted one, and never got around to buying it. I needed one of those really good gifts, and my parents just remodeled their kitchen, so I bought them their first Kitchen Aid stand mixer. They love it so much, and I love it too. I just bought the 300 watt ultra power stand mixer and can't wait to start using it. I give it 5 stars because the mixer is everything it promises to be. If you need more power for heavy bread making, then don't go for the 250 or 300 watt mixer. I have lots of friends who have had their stand mixers for years without any service problems.

Kitchen Aid is the BEST as far as stand mixers go. They are used in many schools, and are still made by a well respected company that makes heavy duty industrial equipment for commercial bakeries, far as I know. However, please note that there are several models of this mixer and while they all look similar and take the same attachments, they vary greatly in the amount of power they have. Your "old workhorse" that you've had for years may have 500 watts of power. This baby Kitchen Aid has only 250. This is a great price, but be aware that you're not getting the most powerful machine in the line.

A warning to everyone! This mixer will NOT run on a GFCI outlet. Since this is the code for all new houses, I don't know why KitchenAid knows this is a problem and won't fix it! I just called them and their response was "yeah, we know that it won't run on the GFCI" but yet, they don't print that anywhere in their material. They told me that my only option was to get an electrician, at my expense, out here to take an outlet off the GFCI protection.
Doesn't make much sense to me!

My last Kitchenaid mixer lasted 50 years! Literally. When my mother passed away, I kept the Kitchenaid mixer that she had used as I was growing up. I used it another 5 years, making over 50 years of use. It was still working when I dropped and broke the glass bowl. Because the mixer was SO OLD, parts were no longer available and the bowl could not be replaced, so I retired the mixer and bought another Kitchenaid. I have used that one for 5 years, so far, and I am now buying this one for my adult daughter to show her what QUALITY is all about!

I received a white one for an early christmas gift and just used it for the first time on he christmas cookies that are a tradition in my family. In the past years, I've used my mother's old stand-mixer, and I've also used a hand mixer, which is near impossible to do with this recipe. This year, I used my new mixer and I am blown away! These cookies, that usually take forever, were done in no time! And even though I didn't think the 4 1/2 quart bowl would be big enough for the whole recipe, I had no problem and room to spare! It's surprisingly deep. It also stayed relatively cool through the three batches of cookies I made (I'm used to beginning to smell smoke from my mothers!)

I only used the flat beater yesterday, but have some bread recpies that I'm dying to use the dough hook on.

Just a few concerns...The dough sticks to the side of the bowl, so I did have to stop from time to time and scrape it off, but that was nothing that I wasn't used to. And you cannot attach a larger bowl to this mixer...the only other bowl you can attach is one of the same size with a handle.

And definately invest in a splash guard. You only get lemon extract in your eyes once to make that decision.

I have enjoyed my kitchenaid mixer for over a year. Unfortunately, right after a year (and the warranty)was over, my mixer starting leaking oil. When I took it to get it fixed, they said this was a common problem after 5-6 years and it has to be repacked. Too bad you don't know this up front. And too bad my mixer only lasted a year before it had this problem. After $30 worth of work, it is up and running again. I thought others would like to know of this potential problem. I will add that is it powerful enough to mix sausage balls in less than two minutes and it has saved me much time from hand mixing. You just need to watch out for the oil!

I have owned my mixer for 14 months and it quit on Thanksgiving Day. For the price, the quality doesn't match. I found out it has a nylon gear in the beater gear system and that gear was stripped, therefore the mixer would run but not rotate the beaters. They would not cover it under the warranty because it was 2 months over, neither would they sell you the nylon gear alone, but you have to buy the stack assembly of gears (...). If it only lasts a year this is not a good buy.

My grandmother used this mixer, my mother used it, and now I use it too (my grandmother still has her 1954 model and it runs well!). This medium-size mixer is powerful, easy to clean, and impossible to damage. It weighs, a ton so find a place on your counter and keep it there. But don't be afraid to try anything with this machine -- it can blend the thickest chocolate chip cookie dough, kneed the stiffest bread dough, and create the stiffest eggwhite peaks. If you splurge on only one kitchen tool, make it a KitchenAid mixer -- and don't forget to leave it to someone in your will, it'll still be working long after we're gone!

I have a large stand mixer and hand held mixer by Kitchen Aid. I have had both for years. When I first used my stand mixer, I noticed power surges when it was running in most of the medium speeds. I took it in for repair and they said it had most likely been hit by a power surge caused by lightning. I explained that it was plugged in to a surge protector. Shortly after I got my mixer back, the problem started again. I called them about it and they did not return my call. Then I received my hand mixer as a gift. While it works well, the beaters will not stay in the mixer if it is raised. I e-mailed the company and got no response. While I feel that Kitched Aid makes a good quality mixer, it appears to me that they are more interested in sales than they are in customer satisfaction. Consequently, I will not purchase another Kitchen Aid product.

With ten children, I've plenty of excuses to try this recipe and that, and it's never let me down. There has been a problem I can't seem to solve, though; the mixing blade's finally cracked on the bottom. Much as I love my machine (and making quality, fresh foods for my many hungry mouths), I am leary of using it till a new blade is found -- somehow, somewhere! Other than having replacement parts at the ready in stores, I'd have to give it a pretty high grade.

We do wedding cakes, I have since gratuated to the biggest baddest model (6qt) this year, the regular would heat up while we beat the "H" out of our frosting. So I would put an ice pack on the motor and this would keep some of the heat from transferring to the frosting. Don't use this model for heavy dough making, but great for regular cooks. ...The pour chute is not included in the manufacturers box, by the way.

The mixer does an adequate job on the usual mixing chores but tends to grind away at heavier jobs such as bread dough. It sometimes stalls on these jobs and needs to cool off for ten minutes or so before resuming.

If you need to make stiff batters and bread doughs, look at the 300 or 350 watt models.
