Great for sandwiches, quesadillas, etc. -- but when I try to cook burgers or steak on the Griddler, the grease stays put on the grill plates, burns, and sets off the smoke alarm every single time. Ugh! I wish there were some sort of tilt, like with the George Foreman grills, for better grease drainage.

I've had the Cuisinart Griddler for about 2 years now and I love it now as much as I did when I first bought it.

Like many other people who first get a contact grill, I went into a grilled sandwich making frenzy for the first two weeks. I still love them, but now I also use the Griddler for delicious turkey burgers, grilled chicken breasts, pancakes, steaks, grilled vegetables and many other uses. The double-sided cooking surface makes griddling impressively fast.

I live in a relatively small "city" apartment and counter space is at a premium. Fortunately, the Griddler is easy to store (mine sits on its side, and takes a minimum of space). I do find that when I bring it out, I use it for many days in a row, each time thinking about what I'll cook next. After it cools, I just snap off the plates, quickly clean them in the sink (the non-stick surface makes it especially easy) put them back on the Griddler and I'm ready for the next meal.

Attractive, powerful, easy-to-clean and offering many different uses, I highly recommend this wonderful product.

I love this griddler. I bought it to replace a big George Forman that had two griling areas with separate temperature controls, nice, BUT clean-up was a nightmare.
I counted on Cuisinart to deliver a quality product and have not been disappointed. I use it several times a week, in fact, I even it brought it along to my father's to cook swordfish steaks for him, rather than use his gas grill! It is small enough to be portable, big enough to cook food for four and fast enough to cook for a crowd. I have done burgers on it, panini, all types of fish and seafood, and just love using it to grill vegetables. Easy to keep clean. I do not put the grids in the dishwasher though, I've found it better to do them by hand.

I love my griddler so much that I use it at least 4 times per week. However, in less than 2 weeks of purchasing the products the letters of the knobs dissapeared when I cleaned it. I didn't use abrasive cleaners or anything like that, just a regular kitchen cleaner. Also, if the juices flow over the grill they get stuck behind the knobs and there is no way to clean behind them to get all the dirt out. Besides that it is the best indoor grill I have had in years.(This one is my 4th grill). It cooks absolutely fast, keeps the moisture in, and can sear perfectly.

I researched many other CONTACT GRILLS online & in speaking with owners. NO-ONE was completely satisfied with this line of cookery EXCEPT owners of the CUISINART GR-4 GRIDLER. After using it I can see why. The one that DRAINS THE FAT AWAY doesn't do as good a job as the CUISINART GR-4 GRIDLER. Many people are still using the CUISINART GRIDLER that they originally purchased. Users of most of the others tell me that their units last 2 or 3 years tops! Cleaning it is far easier than I thought. I found that after removing the GRILL PLATES if I spray hot water on them, they come clean!!!!!!! The grill comes with a 3 year warranty. Operation is extremely easy!!!!!!!!!!!! For just my wife & I, it doesn't make sense to cook everything on the ELECTRIC RANGE when the CUISINART GR-4 GRIDLER will do much of it quicker using much less electricity.

I seldom buy gadget-y appliances, but received this as a gift and am still in love with it a year later. I use it at least twice a week for panini, burgers, fish fillets, pancakes (on the griddle side) - it looks good on the counter top too. It is easy to clean and even with frequent use for over a year, the nonstick surface still keeps everything, even fish, from sticking. It preheats very quickly and because you can cook your burgers, etc on both sides at the same time, it cooks very quickly - actually, watch out because it cooks so fast that things can get overdone before you know it.

I am an infomercial jumkie with a wide array of indivudal griddles, Joe Foreman Grills, Showtime Rotisserie, Flavorwave cooker, microwave, and deep fryer. I now have the Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler. At first, my biggest problem was where to find the counter space to keep it.

We used it for the first couple of days and decided to get rid of the Joe Foreman stuff. Cleaning the plates for the Griddler is super easy. Sometimes I put put a lot of junk (spices, sauces, etc.) on the cheap cuts of meat and then worried if it would clean up between the grill ridges. No problem. Scrapes out almost completely and the dishwasher does the rest. The Foreman Grills, well, they will go to an in-law.

I have used this product for grilling steaks, chops, chicken, hamburgers and hot dogs. The biggest problem is that my wife likes everything well-done and I like mine medium-well. The Flavorwave cooked items fast, but the Griddler is so fast that I have yet to learn just how short of time I need for the meats when using the "sear" feature. It is well done before I can complete a side dish.

This unit has done as well on frozen food as it has on sandwiches! So I have tossed the sandwich maker/griddle and the "pocket maker". The Flavorwave now sits on shelf with the Showtime Rotiserrie waiting for the special occassion when they are needed.

The griddle section works well for breakfast foods and has enough room to feed the three of us. Not sure you can do for more without additional cooking. If you want waffles, the Griddler won't help. You're stuck with another appliance or you have to develop a taste for the frozen waffles.

I have only had the unit for about six weeks so I haven't tried the panini method yet.

I no longer have a big need for the deep fryer as the vegetables on the grill portion come out so good. I do use our oven for the french fries but if you crave that oil taste, keep your fryer handy.

The microwave still is used ... reheating the coffee or a frozen TV dinner-style meal.

I certainly recommend this unit. Easy to clean. Folds up to a small unit on the kitchen counter. Cooks fast (too fast?). It is multitasking. The controls are easy to use. Lights on the controls tell you when it has reached the temperature you set. Everything you might need in today's lifestyle. It is a great product.

Having done my research on grills/griddles before purchasing this item, I really thought that this was the clear winner. It arrived in no time and I was ready to grill, it heats up quickly, and I highly recommend following the cooking recommendations since it is very easy to overcook your food with this unit. I have a few complaints, first off the lip on the surface is not very high and fat and grease, or moisture of any sort bubble and splash all over the counter from all sides of the unit, secondly the unit is not on a slant so the fat just sits around your food and kind of marinates the now lean meat in fat. To try and solve this problem, I rest the back feet on a cutting board, but the liquid seems to just spill over the front of the unit rather than into the receptacle off to one side. After a few uses I have gotten the settings down apt and food cooks evenly and quickly, clean up is a breeze with the removable plates, if the lips was just a bit larger and if the unit was angled for proper fat run-off you'd have a real winner. I am pretty neutral on the item, it works but makes a mess and is a little inconvenient.

->Purchase Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler

I purchased the griddler as a Christmas (2006) present for my husband. Initially, he was thrilled. It worked better than we had anticipated. Our love affair with the griddler, however, was EXTREMELY short lived. By late January, it had begun to "act up." It would occasionally and unpredictably turn itself off. Not long after that, the griddler began shutting itself off every time the temperature was turned above "warm." Though I was shocked at how quickly the item broke, I was still optimistic. After all, "lemons" happen from time to time. I emailed Cuisinart asking what I needed to do to make a claim on the warranty. TWO WEEKS LATER, I received a response telling me to call or email with the model and serial number of the bottom of the unit. Given that their initial email response took so long, I called and was left on hold for over 30 minutes. When I finally reached a surly customer service representative, she informed me that they would send me a new unit for $10. I asked why I had to pay $10 when their unit was defective and was informed that it was a limited warranty. She told me that I should have read the warranty before purchasing the unit. I was further instructed to package the unit up with my contact info and a claim number the representative provided me. After they receive the unit and payment, they will send a replacement. Apparently, there was no way to tell me how long this might take. This experience has ensured that I will never purchase a Cuisinart product again and I thought I'd let others know about my experience in case they too do not like defective products and terrible customer service.

This has worked well for us at least a year.

Yes grilling outside is better but this can be very nice.

It seems to get as hot as I want at the highest but it still isn't quite a grill -- besides you don't want the super high temperature cooking inside unless you have very very good ventilation.

The absolute best thing is that the grill plates detach instantly once cold, and they go right into the dishwasher! If you cook a steak or something at a very high temperature (or for a very long time) you might need to soak and lightly scrub for a minute or two before popping them in the dishwasher but if you do chicken breast or sandwiches, the grills are going to clean up perfectly without a hand wash.

Sturdy materials -- good craftsmanship. The cord is never long enough (I think for safety reasons) and the cord doesn't have a super easy wrap and forget in the back but it is close.

Grilled cheese sandwiches are great just as panini.

I haven't seen anything out there yet that beats this brand and model.

->Cheap Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler

I purchased the Griddler about a month ago, after a friend bought a panini maker and recommended one. I researched as I always do, and since the griddler got good reviews and even though I wasn't sure I'd use the grill feature, it was nice to have, "just in case". Anyway, I made a few sandwiches and they turned out well. (My teenage boys are also more inclined to fix their own quick sandwich when they can use this appliance.) Since then, I've made pancakes and grilled cheese on the griddle and cooked brats, chicken breast and pork chops on the grill. In fact, my husband said the pork chops were probably the best I've ever fixed. The grill cooks without drying out the meat like my outdoor gas grill does. The brats I fixed were juicy, as well.

The reason I didn't rate this product a 5 was because the heating element can sometimes cook a little unevenly, but since I know that now, I just turn things occasionally - it's not a problem.

The griddler cleans up easily - I hand wash if I have other things to wash as well, hoping to keep the non-stick surface nice longer. If not, I just put it in the dishwasher. Overall, I am extremely pleased with my purchase, and am really using it for more purposes than originally thought. (I plan to try fish tonight!)

One of the things I like about buying at Amazon is a chance to see reviews before making a purchase. This panini griddle had excellent reviews. I was about to replace a Krups panini griddle which had very poor reviews. While my Krups also failed out-of-the-blue, unlike for some other folks, my Krups had served me well a couple of years. I replaced it with the Cuisinart GR-Griddler because of reviews. It is attractive in that retro cool way. But, I found it slow to heat up, uneven in heat, cooled down too much with the introduction of two thick sandwiches (I use it as a panini grill), and the lid took some manually adjusting to get it to press evenly on the sandwiches. I was disappointed overall. I moved this machine to our guest house, and once again returned to the Krups. I like the uniform heat, the way the lid adjusts easily to the sandwiches, you just plug it in and unplug it -- simple, but I like the way it works.

->Best Price Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler

When we purchased our Griddler about a year ago there seemed to be only a few reveiws, some glowing, some not so. The complaints were mostly the splattering when grilling something thick, well I can tell you that there is some but this is grilling and ther is much less clean-up than when I use our cast iron grill on the stove. Grilling is much faster since your cooking both sides at once, so you need to watch carefully to keep from over doing it. The top is pivots when grilling to keep it parallel with the food. Griddling is a dream come true. The surfaces are very flat and spread the heat evenly.
Now those minor issues.
The soft plastic feet on the bottom slide to easily on a laminated counter when the is the slightest amount of grease.
You need to take some care when setting up the griddle to make sure the top ends up level.
It would be very nice to also have waffle irons.
The biggest flaw is that the ball catch that is supposed to hold the top and keep it from pivoting is not strong enough to work. This is the only thing that kept me from awarding 5 stars.

I purchased the Cuisinart Griddler after getting tired of trying to clean our other grill (George Foreman) without removable plates. It was always a chore & difficult to try to get the grill clean. After receiving the Cuisinart we made our first meal & it was so much easier. When we were finished eating we removed the grill plates, just pop them out, & put them in the sink with soapy water. They washed up nice & clean, all the way clean, & then when dry popped them back in. Love the fact that the top flips open to double the grill size & the griddle plates that can be interchanged to cook things like pancakes & other items you don't want to press between two plates. It's also nice to have adjustable temperature control for items that don't need to be on high. The size it just about right for our family of 3 but if you needed to cook for more it's quick enough to cook additional right after the first batch. I would have liked it to be a little bigger but it is sufficient & takes up only a small amount of space on the counter. Love this grill! I would definitely recommend.

I love good kitchen appliances--my Kitchen Aid mixer and food processor held top spots for being nearly perfect. This grill is now #1! My sister-in-law in Ireland bought it here on amazon and had it sent for Christmas, and we use it nearly every day. Really. Trying to cook healthier? It's really really actually nonstick so you only need to use a bit of olive oil or butter brushed on bread or veggies for flavour and then grill away. We've put everything in or on it--steaks, paninis, grilled cheese, veggies, pancakes--everything, and it all comes out perfectly. The plates are very easy to remove and need just a light rub with soap under hot water to clean. To open the grill and use it flat, there is one button on the side of the handle et voila! flat griddle. Best, and most important of all: The thermostat is dead accurate, holds VERY steady heat and recovers quickly between batches of sandwiches/pancakes/whatever. It's steady, easy to maneuver, and has a very tidy little counterspace footprint.

It does make good sandwiches
1. The lettering on the unit has rubbed off in less than 45 days. The temperature and setting print have completely rubbed off.
2. The plates are rusting and do not get clean unless scrubbed. Placed in the dishwasher and even after drying, rust spots appear.
4. The handle is not protected and you get burns from accidently touching it.
5. the grease elimnators (cups) do not catch all the grease.
6. Finally, there is no stopping the grease from dropping behind the unit when you raise the lid to remove the items.

I know returns are not possible but am thoroughly dissatisfied.

by: edanc on date: February 4, 2007

->Comparison Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler

Having read all the reviews on this product that I can find, I believe the following problems that I have experienced with the upper half of the Griddler is the first to be documented. The problem only occurs when the upper grill plate is laid out flat (ie. bacon, pancakes, etc.). To keep the top grill stable and flat when open, the design depends on two pins (one on each side of the upper grill) to fit into preformed cups in the handle as it rotates into place. These pins should bottom out in the preformed cups. The problem is that the pins are slightly smaller than needed and don't bottom out. Under use when a slight bit of pressure (ie. flipping pancakes, turning bacon, etc. ) is applied to the outside edge of the upper grill, it can unexpectedly drop down almost a half inch (until the small pins bottom out), thus dumping any liquid (ie. bacon fat) over the top edge of the grill. I solved my problem by wrapping one of the pins with a metal baggie tie. Otherwise the product is Excellent, surpassing my expectations. It uses 11 of 30 amps in my motor home so it often cooks an entire meal without any strain on my services. And boy is it fast. I am almost finished eating by the time the oven toaster it replaced would have warmed up. Cleanup is fantastic --grill plates fit my small sink depressions with room left over. (See "Ideal" and "Actual" photographs).

I'm a "foodie" that is very particular about the method (and madness) of food selection, prep, and taste. I prefer to grill certain foods over fire (and I'm a purist... I don't mean "gas"!) As a busy working mom & wife, sometimes I don't want to bother with the extra effort for healthy, grilled foods on my outside grill. Cold weather sure doesn't help that, either.

I had a G. Foreman grill years ago. It was... okay. I wasn't sad, though, when I threw the sucker away once the cooking surface degraded past my liking. (That thing was such a pain to clean!) The Cuisinart Griddler is awesome! (Worlds apart in my book from the George Foreman I know of.) I'd give this 4.75 stars; hard to say 5 all the way because no indoor grill is perfect to me.

It still has caveats like any indoor grill, but if you properly season the food so it doesn't taste bland (particularly meat), it's unbelievably great!!! The cooking surface is removable and dishwasher safe!!! We've used it for chicken breasts, quesadillas, hamburgers, hot dogs, and steaks so far. Plan to do a panini soon...

I really used the reviews a lot when I researched indoor grills, so I hope this info can be helpful to someone else. Worth the money and would buy it again.

I have been happy with it and now that we live in a condo that does not allow the use of outside grills, I use it more frequently.
I recently had a problem with the unit. I put a steak in it and for some reason decided to "help" it make contact with the steak by pressing down on the handle. I didn't think much of this as it is advertised as a "press". I was alarmed when I heard a loud POP and watched a blue flame shoot out the right side of the unit. In the process I operated a circuit breaker. In subsequent testing I found that the top plate no longer heated up indicating a likely open circuit due to the short circuit that I created by pressing down too hard.
Afterwards, I reread the operating manual. It mentions that, when making pannini, one should press down "lightly" on the handle. I certainly must have exceeded lightly when I damaged the unit. Because there is no warning in the operating instructions about this, I suggest this to be a possible defect and safety hazard, especially as the subjective instruction to press down lightly means different things to different people. Obviously, I am in the heavy-handed category.
I have since purchased another unit because it is otherwise well-conceived and functional. One could probably design the unit with more protection against a heavy press. I will be much more cautious in the future.
Other minor issues are that the nonstick coating is not as slick nor as robust as it might be. After 15 or 20 cleanings, I noticed some metal peeking through and cooking residue does not always just float away without some rubbing. The top plate is a little tricky to put back in as gravity fights against you when the lid is in the open position. If you open the lid all the way to a flat position, it is easier. The top and bottom plates are labeled as such but the label is embossed in the metal plate and you have to look closely to see it. The top and bottom plates are not interchangeable. The lid is hinged so that it can adjust to the thickness of the food when closed and still be parallel. The operation of closing the lid over food can be tricky as it doesn't always self adjust and may push the food out the front when closed. You can avoid this by reaching to the back of the top and guiding into parallel position. This must be done with heatproof gloves on because the top gets very hot.

A present for my wife - at her request - so far this thing has met expectations: grills pancakes, sandwiches and special hamburgers with cheese in them. Easy to clean - pop the elements in the dishwasher as advertised. Only problem is getting the thing to do its parallel heating plate thing with thick sandwiches. Could be stiff or user error.

After much research I decided on this grill. It's very stable and doesn't have the "cheap" feel and look. I've cooked steak, chicken, and fish and have been very happy with all. I've not had a problem with grease running out the back but only to the front into the cups. I do wish I could get the bottom of the meat to get as nice and brown as the top but this isn't a real problem...just a preference. I highly recommend the Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler.

I was drawn to this grill by its sturdy stainless steel look. I have only used it to grill and after one use I have to say it is pretty messy. I cooked 3 good sized lean hamburgers and grease ran out the back and over the sides before any started running to the drip bowl. When you open the lid to check your food, anything stuck to the lid falls straight down and out the back of the grill on to the counter. I have used Hamilton Beach grills for years and they aren't half this messy, but the timers quit working on both Hamilton Beaches. The food in the very front of this grill cooks much slower than food in the back because of the angle of the lid.

I received this for Christmas and was so excited to start using it. My first batch of pancakes using the open griddle option were not at all successful (but the pancakes were partly to blame), so I came here to read the reviews and got a little worried, but I wasn't ready to give up on it yet.

Good thing - I've decided that it works quite well and now I love it. I would give this a 5-star rating, but as some have pointed out, a few changes in design would make this even better.

As some reviewers have noted, there is a problem with some uneven heating and fluctuations in temperature. They could have made this grill heat more evenly if they had snaked the coil underneath. Still, if you avoid the dead zones and try to cook your pancakes in the corners, you can still turn out a very nice pancake. I have a hard time fitting 8 pancakes on at a time - they'd fit, but I'm not very adept at turning them over when they are so closely grouped, but I've had success with 6 at a time. I use the the two inside corners and then the outside middle of each plate. If you try to use the inside middle, there is a big dead zone here where the coils don't meet - avoid this area or your pancakes will cook very unevenly. I also found that I had to crank it up to 400º or 450º to get them to brown nicely.

I've had no problems at all using it as a contact grill and/or panini maker. The unit does tend to cool down quite a bit when you add your food, but I have found that it tends to rebound fairly quickly. This has not been a big issue for me. The meats I cook are not overly greasy, so I have not had a problem with dripping grease, but I have yet to try cooking burgers on it.

The unit will not smoosh down or move your panini if you simply tilt the top toward the center of the grill a bit, so that it's not locked into place, before you close the unit. Tilt the top before you heat the grill or use an oven mitt if it's already heated.

If you'd like to see this grill in action, you may visit my cooking blog - it's called The Savory Notebook (links are not allowed here, but you can Google it). I have recipes and pictures that might help you make your decision on whether or not to purchase this grill.

However, I've taken the plastic grease cups (which are lighweight) and place them in a very small bowl so it doesn't move around. It still fits under the drip spout and it works fine.

Let me say, right off the bat, that I am very pleased with this purchase. I had been looking for months for an indoor grill and had done a fair amount of research before ordering this one. This combination grill and griddle is the right size for my small family. It is attractive, simple to use and easy to store. I love the removable plates. I just snap them off and put them in the dishwasher to clean. Last night I cooked salmon fillets on the grill. I was a little worried about doing this - after all, good fresh fish is pretty expensive and I didn't want to overcook them. Not to worry - they were done to perfection. We have cooked eggs, pancakes, burgers, veggies and bacon on the griddler. The bacon is super because it is not all curled up and overdone the way it sometimes is when cooked in a skillet. I am happy to recommend this product.

I bought the GR-4 Griddler for my husband and I to remind us of our recent trip to Italy and all the panini (grilled, pressed sandwiches)we sampled there. We've used it several times a week since it was opened on Christmas. It is easy to use, incredibly easy to clean (removable, dishwasher-safe plates) and is very versatile. Of course, we make panini with it, but also grilled cheese sandwiches for the kids, quesadillas, burgers, even hot dogs with the press using both plates- the smooth and the grill ones; pancakes, eggs, bacon, steaks, chicken skewers, shrimp kabobs - endless possibilities with the open griddle, again, using both plate types.
I searched around in stores and on-line and researched the different models on the market, and while the Griddler is on the higher end in price, the floating hinge and the dishwasher safe removable/changeable plates were the deal-makers. The unit heats relatively quickly, not as fast as my hungry family would like though, and cooks foods evenly. It's an attractive appliance that I don't mind leaving out on the counter. (I use it so much it hardly gets put away anyway.)

I purchased my Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler on November 11th, 2006. I mostly eat out, being a travelling sales rep, so on the rare chance I do get to cook at home (I love making Panini sandwiches and burgers) and this seemed to me the ideal package.. a very sturdy looking construction, a name I trust and great looks.

However, after less than half a dozen uses, the right hinge snapped. Broke cleanly off while I was LIFTING the upper plate away using the top handle, and this was a real dangerous issue. The right half of the top of the griddler fell down onto the burgers I was cooking and flung grease everywhere. Upon later inspection, the hinge was constructed from the cheapest cast aluminum I've ever seen used in an appliance, I'm telling you it is cheaper than pot-metal. With the sturdy over-all construction of the GR-4 Griddler, this left me extremely displeased, as the only cheap materials were used where it mattered most, where there is stress placed on the hinges. I predict that I'm not going to be the only one experiencing this problem.

->Best Price Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler

I saw the commercials on TV and decided to pick one up for myself as a christmas gift. I live in a small condo, so I have always wanted a really nice bbq or contact grill to make my food have that great grilled look and flavor.

I put the thing to the test the very moment it arrived. I put a salmon steak on top of it and proceded to use it as a bbq grill. It did an amazing job. It left those nice bbq grill streaks on the salmon meet, and the grill got hot very quickly. I was very impressed by the distribution of the heat.

The grill plates took a bit of time to figure out how to clean and wash. I ended up just using a wet/damp paper towel to wipe it clean. The surface does not stick to the food at all, and I've even got cheese on it before.

The griddler makes absolutely great paninis and pressed sandwiches. Just put two slices of bread, buttered on both sides of each slice, and fill with your favorite toppings including cheese, and close the press. In about 5 minutes you will have a cheezy oozing sandwich of goodness.

The press is pretty wide, so you can get 3-4 good side fish steaks on it, or 2 sandwiches at a time.

You are also provided flat grills (without the wedges) to make things like eggs and bacon.

I'm very happy with my Griddler and I use it probably at least 2-3 times a week. I've never used a Foreman grill but from what I hear, you'd be better of spending just a few more bucks and upgrade to the Griddler!

I purchased one of these griddlers for my husband for Christmas to use on our motor home. He does most of the cooking outside when we go camping. He enjoyed using it so much the first trip, we unloaded it when we returned home to use in the house! He said he's going to take every other type grill (gas, charcoal & electric) off the motor home and only use the Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler from now on.
Less than a week after returning from our trip, he asked me to order another one.
I was glad to see that Amazon has it at a cheaper price than anyone else!
This little griddle does everything they say it will. I only read one bad review out of over 75 on it and I think that person who said he burned everything, just didn't know how to use it correctly. He should have turned down the temperature. It does cook very fast, so you can't put the food on and walk away. And it does take a little practice at first but it is so well worth it!
We've cooked everything from thick t-bone steaks, chicken breasts and burgers to toast and wonderful sandwiches...
The grill plates do clean as easy as they say. I haven't put them into the dishwasher yet but then again, I don't turn the dishwasher on every day. Love the ease of just pushing a button to remove the grill plates.
After using this griddle for just over two weeks, I wonder how we ever lived without one!

->Prices Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler

A few months ago I was looking for something to replace my old George Foreman contact grill. I had seen the good reviews on the Cuisinart Griddler, but thought that the price was a bit ridiculous when I had been previously using something that cost 1/5 the price. I did a LOT of research on it though, and all my research pointed to this as the only option, so I figured if I used it enough, it would justify the cost. My purchase was well worth it as the Cuisinart Griddler has virtually replaced my range top. I use it to cook fish, chicken, beef, bacon, pancakes, vegetables, eggs, etc. I also use it as a sandwich press to make some great paninis.

Pros:

Power - This is 1500 watts of power and the number one reason that makes this product so great. By comparison, my George Foreman grill was 700. You need a contact grill with at least 1,000 watts of power to cook on. Otherwise, food cooks unevenly, and you will spend a long time trying to get things like chicken and beef all the way through. This thing gets very hot, and has more than enough power to thoroughly and evenly cook everything I put on it. The bottom and top grill plates have the same temperature. I can cook a ½ lb burger in a few minutes.

Variable Temp Control - The second main thing you need in a contact grill. You can control the temperature setting and use a high heat for most things, or take it all the way up to the "sear" setting for chicken and steaks. It leaves beautiful grill marks on your food. The unit typically only takes about 5 minutes to preheat to the highest setting (but by contrast, takes almost 20 minutes to completely cool down).

Versatility - The top half of the unit folds all the way down, effectively doubling the surface size to use as a griddle. This makes it great for cooking a lot of pancakes or eggs for a large family (especially with the flat griddler plates that comes with it). The surface size of the grill plates is very large, and one plate can easily hold 4 very large burgers.

Panini Maker - Although it doesn't really say it, this is also a great panini maker and sandwich press. The unit is hot enough that it can thoroughly melt the cheese in even the thickest sandwiches (many past contact grills I've used just do not get hot enough). I also use it to warm hamburger buns and toast bread, although it is so heavy it tends to flatten buns and bread if you don't hold the handle up while cooking.

Cleanup - The grill plates snap off easily so they can be placed in the dishwasher. If you've ever used a contact grill that didn't have snap off plates, you will appreciate how nice this is. No more trying to clean an entire grill over the sink while keeping the rest of the unit from getting wet. It comes with a plastic "rake" that cleans up stuck-on food from between the grill grooves as well.

Cons:

The only con I've found is that the black finish on the grill plates comes off a bit. I've used my griddler maybe 100 times and you can see a bit of the steel underneath the black coating. This doesn't appear to affect cooking at all, and perhaps this won't happen if cleaned in a dishwasher (I use a sponge and scrub the plates a lot). The Griddler also is not an angled contact grill like the Foreman grills, so fat does not drain down much

This is one of the best kitchen purchases I've made, and I've found myself cooking much more since buying it. For anyone who eats a lot of meat, fish, and sandwiches, do not be intimidated by the price, the Cuisinart Griddler is well worth it.

The designer of this product must actually BE a cook. I used this product twice, then donated my George Foreman grill to a charity to make space for this baby. The advantages are well worth the exchange. First and foremost - removable, dishwasher-safe panels. I loved the Foreman grill, but HATED cleaning it. The grill and griddle panels are super easy to clean by hand (no more scraping with that plastic do-hickey) or just pop the cooled panels into the dishwasher.
Another advantage is the hinge allowing the top to close evenly instead of closing like a book. I have already used it numerous times to the delight of my family (panini sandwiches are now a homemade favourite). Grilled cheese sandwiches come out perfectly as well.
Press a button and the Griddler opens flat providing two griddle surfaces.
The only drawback is the HOT exterior. Definitely keep an oven mitt handy.

->Comparison Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler

I bought my "Griddler" about four months ago .. big mistake. Okay, it does grill .. but at what cost? Grease splatters everywhere. The top lid hinges in such a way as to drip grease off the back of the unit and try to wipe off that grease to prevent drips at your own risk of being burnt. The top lid swivels and cannot be locked in a position that allows a quick pre grease drip wipe -off. The unit is quite heavy and, for some reason, the grill plates seem far more awkward to clean than on my previously owned George Foreman Grill .. which I will soon own again.

Interestingly, the "drip cups" that seemed to be the only subject for complaint on reviews that I read are not a problem for me.. I have only had grease run-off into a cup once or twice .. it is too busy splattering around elsewhere to be a problem. Note: the grease marks that get on the sides and top are there to stay .. ditto for those around the cooking coil .. but, the splatter on the control knobs can usually be removed if wiped promptly.

A call to a disinterested Cuisinart rep led to an offer to "take a look at it" if I paid to ship it back to them. Sorry, I'll use the avoided freight cost to buy a new George Foreman Grill.

As far as I can tell, the Griddle vs Grill knobs do the same thing...and the unit immediately cools down after putting on a steak...and never gets back up to temperature.

No crust and grey, the appearance of a steak is disappointing.

This grill does NOT SEAR, despite the setting for such.

The plates are thin compared to the Foreman.

I repeat, this is not better than the Foreman removable Grilleration.

No one, and I mean no one, has developed the electric indoor grill that works as it should!

Our older, cheaper model ceased to be non-stick. The Griddler is really nice. It heats up well, and makes great pancakes. The panini grill is really nice, too. The switches work well, and it stores more easily than a flat griddle. My kids make the pancakes most of the time, and they rate this very high. The reason I chose a Cuisinart was because of their excellent customer service with other products. I had a toaster oven that broke after about 2 1/2 years and they sent me a brand new one for only the shipping costs with only one phone call.

One of the hinges holding the heavy lid and top grill plates was broken when we unpacked the item. Closer examination reveals the hing is very poorly made....it is not metal but rather a brittle looking material....if it breaks during use one could sustain very serious burns. This problem is not confined to the unit I recieved. Someone else reported an identical problem here and I found two people selling their units on E-Bay with broken hinges.
Common sense dictates ONE NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT UNTIL THIS DEFECT IS CORRECTED. I have written to the company with cc to consumer protection.

pros-easy cleanup, good value for the money, cooks fast, good having grill and griddle plates, great temperature controls
cons-floating lid is really just a hinged lid that you have to manually use a mitt to adjust after putting food on the grill or it gets smushed or unevenly cooked (I wrongly assumed it auto-adjusted to the food height)

->Buy Online Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler

I'd been dying for a sandwich press and I finally got the cuisinart model because it got good reviews, could also open flat, and had both griddle and grill plates. These were a combination of functions I couldn't find on other models. I've used it quite a bit, and while it's very good at some things it has disappointed me in some ways. The plates are made of aluminum, which means they heat very quickly but they also cool very quickly, like when you put something on them. For a toasty panino you'll do just fine, but if you toss a pork chop or a steak, even on the "sear" setting the temperature control with plumet in seconds and will take a long time to come back up. I would much prefer it if the unit had cast iron plates, but then the cost would go up, people would complain about how heavy it was, how long it took to heat up and cool down and how hard it was to clean. The three dials look nice on the front, but they could get by with only one- The middle switch turns it on to either the griddle setting or the grill setting- the only difference there is that the grill dial has settings that say "warm,low, medium, high, and sear" whereas the griddle setting has a numerical range from 200 to 425. No need to be that precise on a stovetop, especially when the temperature fluctuates as you put things on and take them off. Two other minor complaints: 1) The drip cups aren't attached so better make sure they are handy when you need them and don't knock them away accidentally. 2) the lid tends to squish sandwiches to the front or back when you close it. A small finger handle in the front would remedy the situation, but I use a dish towel or a pot holder and adjust it manually. This unit is great for making one or two panini in a jiffy. The more you stray from that path the poorer it will perform.

->Deal Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler

I cannot believe how much I use this griddler. It has 2 sets of cooking surfaces, either flat or "ridged". The flat is used for eggs, bacon, pancakes, etc. - and the "ridged" is for meat or poultry. The griddler can be opened flat to allow cooking bacon on one side, while cooking eggs/pancakes on the other OR it can be close to cook meat from the top and the bottom at the same time. Hamburgers and steaks cook in less than 10 minutes!

In addition to being able to cook anything QUICKLY with ease, it is so easy to clean! Just pop out the plates, put them in the sink/dishwasher, and your done.

I cannot imagine any kitchen without one of these!

I bought this back in Jan. 2005 and it's been terrific. If it's nasty outside or snowing, we toss our pork chops, steaks, chicken or whatever on this great little grill. My sister has a George Foreman grill but I didn't like the fact that the lid doesn't close evenly on top of the cooking area. So that's when I found this Cuisinart which unhinges to lay flat. Also with the Amazon coupon, it brought it down to the Foreman pricetag. Grilling takes 6-8 minutes tops depending on thickness!
Toss the grill plates into the dishwasher and you are done! And I like the fact it has a cord holders on the backend to wrap the cord around.

Although this grill has all the design elements I wanted - easy to use, quick to clean, and very compact, it is very cheaply made. After just 3 uses, One of the joints that adheres the top to the bottom broke. Had I not reacted quickly, I would have been burned. We were very fortunate that our child was kept away from ever using it.

Upon close examination, we found the weak joint to be made of some sort of brittle, composite material, NOT metal. It's such a disappointment to see such a terrific design implemented so poorly.

I have to admit to being a kitchen small appliance junkie and I've bought some clunkers over the years but I LOVE this one more then most! When I first saw it advertised in a magazine months ago, I tore out the page as a reminder to check this out and I'm glad I did. This week alone, I've used it 3 times already and I haven't even cooked a burger on it yet. Marinated chicken breasts come out juicy.....tuna and salmon are done quickly so you have to watch them carefully but they're just so yummy (try marinating them in lemon juice and wasabe mustard...WOW!!). A favorite addition is sauteed onions and The Griddler makes them super quick.....and grilled portabella mushrooms are super quick and easy. I've not used it as a griddle yet but I don't cook for a crowd.

I've found clean-up to be very easy and I'm not a big fan of hand washing anything but with a short soak in soapy water and the use of one of those scrubbies designed for Teflon, it's been a breeze. I do use an olive oil flavored spray before heating so maybe that makes a difference.

I bought the griddler in February of 2005 and have taken care to ensure it lasts. The Griddler is heavy and sturdily constructed. It heats up quickly, and cleans up even faster. We have used it for Panini, grilling meat, and toasting burger buns. The griddler comes with interchangeable dishwasher safe griddle and grill plates. The unit can be used as a Panini press or as a griddle.

The base of the unit heats up and maintains temperature better than the top. This creates uneven toasting of the Panini or other items. It's not so much of a problem using as a griddle, since one side will simply cook faster than the other.

After a year the nonstick surface has started pealing off of the grill plates. I have never used metal on the nonstick surface and have taken great care to preserve the finish. Perhaps it is in the design, but the now I will have to take care not to get pieces of the nonstick surface in my food. The plates don't stay attached in the top anymore either. It's very annoying trying to reposition a hot plate into place.

I've had the Cuisinart Griddler for just over a year, using it about twice a week.

It has performed admirably and is still in great shape. No problems with the non-stick coating to report. Burgers come out great! Fish tends to stick sometimes to the upper plates, but it's not that much of a problem.

It's true that it tends to spill grease at the back as the top plate is lifted. The front buttons also often get some fat spilled over them, but the cleanup is fast and easy. I usually put some foil under the grill to make sure there's nothing spilled over the counter. Then just use the soapy wet cloth to clean up the front and the back of the grill.

Overall, I'm pleased both with the performance and the reliability of this product. Looking forward to many more years of in-home grilling.

->Purchase Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler

I've been using this item at least once a week for about six months now. I use it primarily as a griddle for french toast or pancakes or as a grill for hamburgers. As a griddle, it works fine. I wish it were a little bigger, but with creative arrangement it will hold 6 pieces of french toast. As a grill, it leaves a lot to be desired. It has a drip tray, but the unit is not angled properly for the grease to drain. I use 96% fat free ground beef, which is pretty dry, but the grease -still- runs out of the back of the unit. I'd taken to propping it up, which helped but didn't solve the problem. Last night, I propped it on two inverted bowls--so much of an angle that the grease was running down over the controls in the front, and it -still- ran out the back of the unit. It isn't that I've overloaded the grill--we're only talking 4 hamburgers. But that's done it for me. I'm going to take a good look at the George Foreman GRP90WGR. It also has removable plates, and maybe it's better designed.

If you're looking for a griddle or a panini press, the cuisinart could be great. But if you make hamburgers as often as I do, you might want to look somewhere else.

We have had this product for over 1 year. This product has a few of great features:

1. The interchangeable nonstick plates that are dishwasher safe.
2. The unit opens up to a large griddle.
3. The cooking plates are dishwasher safe.

However, the nonstick surface has started peeling off of the plates even though the plates have never been abused, and we have never used metal utensils on them.

Our biggest complaint is the thermostat. The unit will reach the desired temperature, and then turn off. The cooking plates will actually cool off so much that the food will stop cooking. The thermostat will then kick back on and take about 3-5 minutes to get back up to temperature. It is very annoying, and doesn't always produce good results with food.

There also is a large temperature difference between the two plates when the unit is opened as a large griddle. This causes items being cooked to finish at different times.

This could have been a great product, but Cuisinart seems to have gone "cheap" in areas that are integral to the function of the griddle. I would not purchase this item again.

-It's an indoor press/grill [like a un-named retired boxer's product]
-It is a great griddle
-It's suppossed to be an open grill too ... but who cares about that?

PROS:
-even heating
-easy clean-up [plates into dishwasher]
-great non-stick coating
-big surface [enough for 2-4 people's breakfast]
-floating hinge and deep grooves [for panini]
-gets hot enough to actually grill a steak

CONS:

-two dials doing the same thing, rather than one labeled for 2 purposes
-grease catch cups too light [easy to knock out of position]
-takes up a good bit of counter real-estate
-outer metal shell gets HOT ... but big handle stays cool
-tends to drip some grease on counter when you open the lid

Conclusion:
-good for feeding 4 or less
-a bit pricey, but worth it as it makes you breakfast and lunch almost every day, and dinner once in a while
-buy it if the GF grill isn't enough, and you need a mid-size griddle

I got this grill/griddle after visiting my parents over the holidays and having a couple dinners made by mom on hers.

Why I love it:

- It's a very sturdy unit, and doesn't feel wobbly or junky like some of the cheaper versions made of plastic. It's a nice, heavy grill and the grill and griddle plates are also very sturdy.
- I LOVE that the plates pop out and can go right into the dishwasher or, if you're feeling handy, easily clean up in the sink.
- It's two appliances in one - a panini press/grill and griddle - which saves space.. an important attribute for a kitchen gadget addict with limited storage space
- The floating hinge ensures that when you 'close' the grill, it's still getting full coverage on the top and bottom of whatever it is you're cooking, and saves you from having to flip it
- Convenience of a grill without having a big barbeque, and healthier/less messy than grilling with a charcoal BBQ

There are many other versions of this type of appliance out there, but none matched the quality or the versatility of the Cuisinart in this price range. Definitely more expensive than the typical Foreman-type grill, but the versatility and quality warrant the additional expense.

I just use the tool that came with it to scrape off the major gunk and put the removable plates in the dishwasher. They come out perfectly clean and ready for more. After reading a few of the other reviews, I was concerned about whether there would be a big splatter mess on my countertop. There hasn't really been any mess. I'm disappointed by this product. I was comparing it to the George Foreman models with removable grill plates, and I went with the Cuisinart model because it seemed like a better made product.

Cleaning the grills is a huge PITA. My old george foreman grill had attached plates, but it wasn't as much of a hassle to clean. I've tried soaking the plates, leaving wet paper towels on them after cooking, non stick spray...nothing makes the job easier. Each pretty grill mark on the meat leaves a huge mess on the grill, and each raised metal grill portion has a 90 degree angle for food to get stuck in. To clean it thoroughly, you need to go over each angle, then clean the tops, then the middle troughs. It's very time consuming, and it makes me question whether the plates are actually coated with something nonstick.

I'm also diappointed by the depth of the grilling plates. Liquid and fat pours over the edges easily. It puddles by the griddler's feet, on the back side, and into the grill where the heating elements are.

I think this item is best suited for pancakes or grilling sandwiches. It doesn't handle grilled meat or moist items very well.

I don't think I would re-purchase the item, because it takes way too long to clean it. It makes it more of burden than a useful kitchen tool.

Forman toy, this has a floating hinge, so it makes full contact with whatever is in it, up to maybe 3 inches or so. It opens fully, so you can use it as two grills/griddles, which I have done when making pancakes. Close the griddle plates and you can warm tortillas or quesadillas. You can even do pizza with a sheet of non-stick aluminum foil over the top (or you could use something thick to keep the two plates apart). I've just about stopped using my toaster/oven.
The plates are non-stick -- I hand wash between uses if the plates get soiled. Often a rinse alone will suffice, but I have put the plates in the dishwasher when that was convenient.
I am buying another as a wedding present -- better than a toaster

After reading many reviews on the gr-4 and compare these to other brands, I decided to buy the Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler because the pros exceed the cons. I don't use it a lot but so far, everyone in the house loves it, easy to use and clean. Overall a great value.

-> Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler

I love the griddler. It is fast, easy to use, and easy to clean. I have two minor problems with the system; the first is the drip cups. They are of inferior quality, after the first use they have a permanent ring inside which no amount of cleaning will fix. The second problem is the lock feature. When you raise the upper section of the griddler it stops at the 90 degree angle until you release it to flat or closed position, but the plate continues to swivel. Most of the time this is not bad but if you are trying to change plates (from griddle to grill) the movement is a little distracting. If by chance, the grill is hot when you are trying to move it to the flat position the swivel action is awkward, I nearly burn myself on it.

Despite the minor annoyances, I love the system. I love being able to remove the plates for cleaning and cooking a variety of food. The heat is even and controlled. It is great.

Review: A Bit Messy - more of a griddler than a griller
by: Gadget Geek :) on date: March 9, 2006

->Buy Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler

I would bought this one but I am going to return it.

Problems:
1. When I make hamburgers the grease runs down to the front and then boils and splatters all over the knobs. The spattering grease hurts and the knobs as well as my counter top get all messy.

2. When I opened the top cover the grease runs down the top cover onto my counters and the cord in back of the griddler.

3. There is nothing to hold the grease cup in place so it is easy to bump the cup and let grease and oil run all over the place.

4. Too many knobs - 3 knobs to do the work of 1.

5. The little grease catching cup seemed to dissolve where the grease drips, I didn't expect it to last long.

6. I checked with an infrared thermometer. There are heat distribution issues.

7. The packaging does not give room for the spring covered cord that runs from the top of the griddler to the bottom so the cord was bent at a crazy angle and I needed to spend a few minutes straightening it out.

8. The unit gets really hot on the outside (ouch) and takes a while to cool down, don't expect to be able to pull it out quick to make a meal, wipe it down and put it away.

So far so good. I've grilled chicken and steak tips a few times each. I haven't done panini sandwiches yet. No problems with the temperature control or hot/cold spots. Everything cooked evenly. Clean up has been very easy with the removable grill plates. Only downsides so far are the drip cups which worry me a bit and also a concern for grease dripping off the top onto the counter behind the unit. No spills/drips yet but I can see where it could happen. Generally I set it up on a large cutting board just in case.

->Lowest Price Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler

I don't have a lot to add to previous reviews.

The cons are that the grill isn't angled to help the liquids drain off and that when the lid is up the liquids draining off the top don't drip into the lower section but instead drip onto the counter in the back.

There are a lot of pros...

- The removable cooking surfaces are very easy to remove and clean.
- The swiveling lid adjusts easily to conform to foods of different thicknesses.
- The ability to lay the lid out flat to make a larger flat cooking service is nice. Being able to use the smooth griddle surface on one side and the grate on the other is also handy.

All-in-all, this is a wonderful appliance. We've used it for sandwiches, quesadillas, and chicken breasts. All worked perfectly and cleanup was easy. What more could you ask?

Much better than the forman grill....has adjustable heat and the removable cooking plates are great....The heating takes a little to get use to the element is a big square when it should be coiled or multiable "S" shapes but it still does very good job for all cooking (eggs, bacon, burgers, chicken etc.) Also good price on here

->Comparison Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler

The Cuisinart GR-4 is an all purpose griddler/grill that has many advantages over an over-the-stove similar appliance.
Enough surface to make 8 pancakes at once (great for a family of 5 like mine)with great temp control and fool-proof non-stick surface.
Two drawbacks;
a. There is a "cold" spot where the heating element comes out of casing. You have to rotate food around the get even cooking.
b. When open, there is a gap between the two sides. It would be so much better if the two side interlocked.

Overall a great value and it matches all my other Cuisinart stainless steel appliances (and I have them all)

I really like tools/appliances that can do multiple things. I have a small kitchen, so having a separate grill and griddle was not going to happen. I love the fact that you can close the lid and cook both sides of food at the same time. Dinner has never been on the table so fast! Easy clean-up, too. Can't think of anything I don't like about it!

I couldn't wait to get this, so my hubby and I decided it would be our mutual anniversary present in December. I'm glad we did. I'd give it 5 stars based on ease of cleaning and taking out and replacing the plates, but I deducted one star because the floating hinge doesn't float as well as I'd like, so I usually adjust it, and, the top seems to cook faster than the bottom, so I usually turn what I'm cooking, despite pre heating. I am really happy that I don't dread cleanup anymore. Nice machine. I would definitely recommend it as the deficits are so minimal.

Just bought the Griddler using Amazon's $25 dollar coupon and free shipping - great buy! I have used this everynight for the last week and love it. Started off simply with flat grills and made orange zest toast - yum! Then moved onto sirloin steaks (overcooked it) as it only takes 4 mins on high. Grilled portabella and onions are amazing - takes about 2-3 mins after basting in oil & wine with a few herbs spinkled on for good luck! Bought a pair of Tyson lemon-pepper marinated chicken breasts and pounded them to 1/2" thick - cooked for 3 mins on high - fab and juicy!! I keep the oven circulating fan on while cooking to suck up some of the smokey fumes, but you are not cooking for long so not really a problem. Clean up is so easy - just leave lid up and let heat dissipate and remove once warm/cold and rub with sponge and soapy water for 1 min - I'm not going to put in dishwasher in case the non-stick comes off (cowardly, I know). Sliced large baking potato in 1/4" slices, microwaved for 4 mins then basted with olive oil/herbs and grilled on high for 4 mins - delish! This is a MUST buy especially if Amazon has coupon or on sale.

We love this thing for making paninni's, pancakes, hamburger, bacon etc.... You can cook on the grill- cover shut: a sirloin steak in 5-7 minutes, hamburgers in 4-5 minutes, bacon 2 minutes if your using the grill plates and shuting it. ALWAYS let meat rest on a plate covered with foil for 2-5 minutes. Play with different breads and cheese and even different meats. The only downfall is: when you lift the top, if your cooking something greasy it will drip on the countertop, and it may drip down on the dials. That has only happened a couple times for me. We use it allllll the time. LOVE THIS ITEM, A MUST FOR EVERY KITCHEN. I cook ALOT and I really like this and so does my husband.

I would have expected the plates to be a little thicker/heavier. There is some slight uneven heating where the middle of the plate is not as hot as the perimeter. Most noticeable with pancakes. Other than that, I am very pleased. I use this appliance almost daily and more than once some days. Its easy to set up and easy to clean. I have used it for grilled meats, quesadillas, pancakes, and all kinds of panini. I'm really enjoying it.
