I do not consider my KitchenAid a kitchen basic, but since I do quite a bit of scratch baking (primarily cakes), I find this a helpful tool that makes baking easier. It is not as noisy as I expected it to be. I have used it while my toddler was napping without waking him up, and I have a small house. I also much prefer the texture of the whipped cream using the whisk attachment because it is much lighter and fluffier than when using an immersion blender as I did before. While I don't recommend it, I have even creamed butter at refrigerator temperature. Other times I have dumped an ingredient in at once rather than little by little as the recipe suggested with no bad result (e.g. eggs into creamed butter & sugar, and powdered sugar into chocolate frosting). This is a good thing, because sometimes it is hard to add ingredients little-by-little in the space between the bowl opening and the machine, as when you might be adding powdered sugar straight from the sifter. And, I will say I have not yet mastered attaching the bowl to the stand with ease. The accessory to my KitchenAid I look most forward to getting is another bowl. If you are in the process of building up kitchen equipent, a hand mixer would be a cheaper and adequate substitution for a stand mixer for most baking. The advantages of a KitchenAid are lots of power, and being able to mix ingredients hands-free.

I was all prepared to buy a 400-some watt motor KA at a warehouse club, but this one was on sale, and for about $20 more, I figured I'd go big or go home.
And I haven't been disappointed. I like to bake bread, but I lose interest in the kneading process. I'm baking bread weekly and it's just fabulous. Sure, I made some chocolate mousse and cookies along the way, but I am confident that since this mixer can turn out bread dough in a matter of minutes, it can handle anything.
As far as the capacity, I usually make half batches of bread dough (3c flour; 1c water) and I don't have any problems because the mixer is too big. I alsom make standard size batches, but I've never attempted to test the true flour power of the mixer with a 12c batch.
I have to admit, I had a problem with my mixer (getting stuck on 'warp speed') after particularly heavy batches. I don't post that to scare anyone, but rather illustrate that KA customer service is just fantastic. Within 2 business days, I had a brand new replacement at my doorstep, with instructions on how to return my current mixer. All postage paid.
I think a lot of people post reviews when something goes wrong. Well, KA this KA is all right.

I have been wanting a Kitchen Aid to make my life easier for some time now. I finally gave in and put out the $$. My husband convinced me to get the large model since we have 6 children and I spend a lot of time in the kitchen.
I have only had this about 6 weeks and I love it. It has made my life so much easier. It is easy to use, it cleans up easily. I use it for cookies, pancakes, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, bread, muffins...
It is very large, so you really need a spot on your counter to put it and leave it. If I had to pull it out everytime, I would not use it. But since it is out, I use it constantly.
The only thing I can say is I made a small batch of pizza dough (3 cups of flour) and it came out just "OK" because I think it was too small for this capacity machine. But I have only had this 1 month and I am still on a learning curve, so it could have been me.

My wife and I finally broke down and bought a Kitchen Aid. We had known of this product for many years and we had always rationalized not spending the money on it an opted for cheaper one after cheaper one. Well now that we have been through the rest we now have the best (pardon the pun). Its true though, other than doing its intended job, it seems to excel at it. I regret having waited so long to make this purchase.

But be careful what you pay for this mixer. I've seen prices anywhere from $400 down to $289 (including free shipping) for the exact same mixer. Any price around $320 seems reasonable (which is what I paid).
When you use it at high speed, the all-metal gears do "whine" very loudly. My wife said she expected that, but I was somewhat nonplussed when I couldn't talk with her in the kitchen over the din of the mixer.
Overall, this is the best mixer of the Kitchenaid genre - higher quality gears than Artisan and cheaper models, 6 quart bowl, 575 watts, bowl lift, and package includes a 1-piece pouring shield.
For a little more, buy this mixer (or one like it) versus the cheaper mixer. In the long run, you will be happier.

I still have my Kitchenaid Classic Stand Mixer for 17 years and it is still kicking, but I have wanted this newer, bigger Kitchenaid for sometime. The price was the only thing keeping me from buying. My husband convinced me that in spite of the price tag, it's a well-made machine and if it lasts as long as my Classic, it would be well worth the plunge. I checked prices all over and Amazon was the best price (especially since I got mine w/o shipping costs!). I also lucked out because I opened an Amazon account, and Kitchenaid offered a mail-in rebate!! It was a great Christmas gift to me! I purchased dark pewter which wasn't what I thought it was when I got it. I called customer service at Amazon and they couldn't have been nicer. They said that I could switch it for the correct color, no problem, since the color appeared different on the website. I decided I didn't want to wait any longer and kept the dark pewter--which still looks good with my black appliances (licorce was my other choice). It's great to know that Amazon was so cooperative. I also like purchasing from Amazon because of the very helpful reviews.
Now about the machine. It's beautiful. I don't have a problem with the size, but please note it is BIG (height and width). I love the fact that the bowl is 6 quart so you can mix batches of cookies, potatoes, etc. You can even add ingredients easily since the bowl was made wider--I can add while it's mixing. I love the bowl-lift design...easier than the tilt head of my older Kitchenaid. And the soft-start feature really does work. I can't comment about the different speeds, because in the 17 years of having Kitchenaid stand mixers, I hardly use the higher speeds (except the occasional home-made whipped cream, etc). At any speed, Kitchenaids are very powerful work horses. I haven't used the accessory hub yet, but I know it will work wonderfully. You used to have to unscrew the cap; now they put it on a hinge so you just have to flip it!
If you want a dependable, long-lasting, well-made, beautiful machine, forget the other machines and get a Kitchenaid. You won't regret it.

I owned the smaller KitchenAid mixer before and it was good. This KitchenAid 600 is great. I have two teenage daughters that love to bake large batches of cookies for school events. I use it to mix my Masa for Tamales and it handles the load easily. The sausage attachment is great for making homemade chorizo sausages or brat style sausages. This mixer is a bit pricey but now I have a great mixer to leave to each of my daughters.

I just recently purchased this mixer from Amazon. I ordered it one day and received it the next! That was very fast shipping!!! The mixer is great, I've had no problems so far and since it doesn't have the tilting head, it fits right under my cabinets on the counter. It also reaches the sides of the bowl (unlike a sunbeam I owned) and I only have to stir maybe once.
The only problem I had when I first got it is that I didn't know the back of the bowl had to snap into place so I thought it was broken. I called kitchenaid's helpline and they were very courteous about it and instructed me what to do.
If I could do it over, I'd definataly buy this mixer again! It's better to have too much power than to have not enough!

I love this mixer. I moved up from a 12 year old 4 1/2 qt. and am so glad I did. I'm a big holiday cookie baker and this mixer was exactly what I needed to be able to do 2x, 3x and even 4x batches.
Just two VERY minor annoyances:
I don't understand why KitchenAid ships this with the burnished beater and doughhook that can't go in the dishwaser - I ordered the coated ones from KitchenAid on-line and am so glad I did - you would think for the price of the mixer it would come with stainless or at least the coated beater and doughhook.
I wish the bowl handle was on the right side of the bowl instead of the left, and I do wish they had a handleless bowl, just from a storage perspective. For my old one I had one with a handle and one without and then I could store them nested on the stand with the 3 qt inside them. I also wish there was a smaller bowl for frosting (i miss my old 3 qt.).
I wish I had bought this sooner, and am so glad I did.

I decided to go with the Pro 600 because of the increase in power over regular models. The mixing bowl is also larger and I like how it is mounted securely on the stand. Customer service told me attachments cannot be put in the dishwasher, but it only takes a minute to clean them. The mixer worked overtime during the 2006 holiday season. It made dozens and dozens of cookies for us. It powered through even the thickest of doughs.
It worked flawlessly except for one issue. The attachments were very hard to slide off of the mixer. Our solution was to spray some vegetable oil on it to keep it lubricated. Works great now! Big investment, but we can't bake without it now.

I run a small two person bakery, a startup business which is 2 years old. I have 2 kitchenaids and needed a bigger more powerful one but not a huge one which is a floor model. I also have a limited budget for equipment. This model was the perfect choice -- powerful, large enough for multiple recipes such as when we make wedding cakes. It does not do well with one recipe batters, however, so I still need the smaller kitchenaids.

I have an older Kitchen Aid mixer with not as much power. This goes through big batches of bread dough easily and without strain. It is definitely worth the extra money. There was a minor scratch on the mixer, but I can live with that. Just thought that Kitchen Aid should be a little more careful in their QC inspectins before putting in the box. The scratch is hard to see and blends in with the paint, so no big deal.

My mixer got a real work out at Christmas and it lived up to all I expected. Cookie dough mixed easily without effort. Cake batter was easy and the cakes I made were very moist. I was afraid with the mixer's power the batter might be overmixed but it wasn't at all. I love it and I would recommend it to anyone who does a lot of baking.

I bought this for my wife and so far, the only thing I noticed is that it's alot of mixer!! If you occasionally need to use a mixer for smaller items, I would save the money and buy a smaller version of this mixer but if you plan to do a lot of kneeding of breads and pizza doughs, I would go ahead and get this one but it is a fairly big mixer. Otherwise it's a very nice mixer.

Due to the very high number of complaints about the problems people were having with heavy duty tasks (which is what the mixer should have been made for!) due to cheap plastic housing holding the heavy duty metal gears, I contact KitchenAid to find out if this design flaw has been fixed. It has been and here is their response (note that they are saying that if you receive one of the models with the plastic housing they will replace it under warranty with the new metal housing. It is also important to note that the people who've had the problem have almost all stated that KitchenAid had great customer service and replaced their mixers with no ones with no problems.
RESPONSE FROM KITCHENAID: Thank you for visiting the KitchenAid website!
I would like to reassure you that our engineering and product teams have addressed the gear box issue. In fact, we have already implemented a change in the manufacturing of the Pro 600 Stand Mixers to a metal gear box. Although these will be changed out on additional 5 qt bowl-lift models that include all metal gearing, the time line on that is not known at this time. Although a transparent change, this will insure the long-term durability we expect.
I would like to emphasize to you that should you purchase a Stand Mixer (with all metal gearing) which has not been assembled with the upgraded metal gear box, and you should have a problem with your mixer (as a result of the plastic gear box (failure), we will most certainly extend your warranty to resolve the issue properly and effectively.

I have had this model for about 4-5 years. Before I purchased this I had a 5-quart KitchenAid Artesian mixer that I got for a wedding present in 1992.
I have always baked a lot. Especially from fall through spring and the Artesian was great. However, the five-quart model just got to be too small, especially when I had kids. Since I had kids I bake more and found myself doing two to three batches back to back with the Artesian.
Now with this model I can double batches of pumpkin bread, cakes or cookies with no problem and be done in less time with less fuss. I thought I would miss the tilting head but I don't.
The only thing I did not like about this model were the aluminum blade and dough hook. So I ordered the coated ones for this machine. I always soak my blades and wash them by hand; it would be nice if they made stainless steel versions of these but enough consumers have to make noise to get them to do something.
I gave my old Artesian 5-quart to my niece who is single with no kids. She also bakes a lot but in smaller batches than I do and the Artesian is still going strong. It works great and looks like new and her friends are always trying to borrow her mixer. If you don't bake a lot or tend to bake in smaller batches the Artesian is great.
This model is a great choice for a high volume home baker like me; great quality, durable and powered to do bigger batches.

I have owned a Kitchen Aid Ultra Power for 15 years and try as I might, I could not break it. I finally relented and purchased the new Kitchen Aid Professional 600 with 575 watts of true power. I really like the additional capacity of the 6qt bowl and the soft start. It kneads bread better than the older one without binding the dough on the hook. The mixing shield is also much more user friendly. The only drawback is there is not enough room to freely detatch mixing attachments without taking the bowl off and it can get messy.

I was concerned that this mixer might be so big it would take over the kitchen. Well it is not. The motor does not tilt up to remove the bowel, the bowl goes down at the push of a lever, so it needs no extra headroom. So the mixer will fit on a counter under shelves. The nickle finish looks great and I bet it stays that way.
Power / Capacity possibly overkill for many applications but better too much than too little.

They advertise ALL METAL GEARS, but fail to disclose that those gears are held in place with a PLASTIC COVER!
Allow me to share my story:
I am an engineer, my wife; a domestic goddess. We have not purchased a loaf of bread in this household for over 3 years now. Every kitchen gadget we own is top of the line because we know that it'll get used, and used hard. That and being an engineer, I can really appreciate a well designed product. The KitchenAid mixer is the ONLY appliance we own that has continuously failed at every opportunity.
Dezra (my wife) had been using her Artesian 325 watt to make dough's and whatnot for years. When she started getting serious about bread making, she requested the wheat grinder for Christmas, which she got. When she put it on the mixer, it strained for a bit then "Popped".
I could hear that the transmission had broken. I opened it up and found that the electric motor feeds into a gearbox, and all the gears in that gearbox are held together by a PLASTIC COVER! I was astonished that ANY design engineer would consider that as being sufficient.
What happens is that the strain on the motor translates directly to strain on the gears, which warm up. As soon as the plastic cover warms up, it starts to flex. The moment it starts flexing, the gears are no longer meshing properly which generates more heat until the teeth of the gears bind up and the plastic cover simply cracks.
I called up KitchenAid hoping to get replacement parts as this unit was over 2 years old and definitely out of warranty. We told the customer service rep our problem and they stated that they would ship out a new mixer immediately, that they no longer made the Artisan model and they would have to upgrade us to the Professional 6 with 525 watt motor. Oh yes, and what color would you like sir?
We were amazed by the speed and courtesy of their customer service. They stated that we ground too much wheat for too long. Uh huh, sure. They made a product with a cheap part and that cheap part broke.
Well, once we got our new Professional 6 we plugged it in and started grinding wheat. It wasn't 5 minutes before the gearbox broke on that one too! Could they possibly be using the same gearbox cover? Well, sure enough, I pulled the cover off and it had the exact same gearbox and cover as the 350 watt motor. I was floored. They are using a motor that is nearly 2x as powerful but they didn't beef up the gearbox? That's like putting the transmission of a geo metro into a truck and expecting it to hold up. The bigger the motor is simply ensures the more power going into that gearbox which will undoubtedly fail. The bigger the motor, the faster it'll fail.
I told customer service, as they were shipping out a new one, that ALL they had to do was put a metal cover on the gearbox and all the problems would be solved.
My wife got the new mixer and promptly put the wheat grinder away, permanently. She now grinds wheat with her Vita Mix blender.
Well, a year has passed and we're now hearing the gearbox popping and rattling. I open it up, see the familiar plastic cover, shake my head and call customer service. What I heard from them had me bewildered. Should I be laughing or crying?
They said that we were mixing the bread dough for too long at too high of speeds. Excuse me??!! This plastic part was under engineered and so therefore your response is to only use my mixer in 10 minute increments out of fear of breaking it? Wrong answer.
That's like buying a new pickup truck and having it break down the first time you try and haul something. Taking it back to the dealership only to hear them say, sorry, your 1 ton pickup truck can only pull a half ton load in 10 minute increments, and you can't be going over 45 at any time while doing so.
Excuse me, that's why we bough a KitchenAid, was so that we could USE IT! Their customer service stated that if we wanted to keep the mixer, well, we shouldn't use it.
Having done design work, I know what is happening. KitchenAid knows that 90% of their customers don't bake bread except for special occasions. They use this for making cookies and whatnot, and only on occasion. They designed the internals using the CHEAPEST PARTS they could get away with, that way they can make an extra $5 on each machine sold knowing that only a small % will come back while under warranty. The ones that they do have to swap out will be covered by that extra $5 they're making on all the others.
They consider this a wise tradeoff. Well, it might be if the internet didn't exist and people like me could post a review that exposes them for what they are doing. They're taking a MONSTER of a brand name and throwing it out the window, all for a plastic part that would cost $1 to have milled out of aluminum.
We now have, courtesy of Kitchenaid this new Professional 600, and wouldn't you know it, it has the same plastic cover. All this means is that this gearbox will break faster than all previous ones. What's the use?!

I make a lot of bread using my KitchenAid mixer, and for years I have tolerated my 4.5 quart Ultra Power KitchenAid mixer. Anytime a recipe called for 6 cups of flour, I knew I would have to finish the recipe by hand. The 4.5 quart bowl just couldn't handle that much dough. I just purchased the Pro 600 with the spiral dough hook, and all I can say is WOW! The new spiral hook works totally different than the older C-hook. No longer does the dough "slap" against the side of the bowl. Instead the sprial dough hook brings the dough to the middle of the bowl for mixing and kneading. You can see how much more effective this tool is. I have already ran 5 different bread recipes through this mixer, and I haven't had to finish any of the by hand yet. Just enough to shape the dough before proofing. The 6 quart bowl is a must have for bread makers! Now I just have to figure out how to give away all this bread!

I got my kitchenaid 600 mixer from amazon. After it arrived, I prepared a sourdough recipe that called for 8 cups of flour, the mixer bogged down and quit. I have prepared the same recipe 4 more times, each time the mixer quits. I thought this behavior was abnormal, but after a bit of online snooping, it turns out that many people experience similar problems when working with thicker doughs.
Kitchenaid clains it can handle 14 cups of all purpose flour, it simply cannot, in fact, i would set the maximum at about 10 cups for a less dense dough, and at 7 or 8 for thicker breads.
Ultimately, this is the best mixer available to the home baker in this price range, as much sturdier commerial grade models in this size ( 6 quarts) begin at about $1500. However, don't expext to use it to make thick bread or pizza doughs in large quantities, it simply isn't up to the task. It will do most of the work, but some hand kneading is still required.
Despite it's all steel gears and automatic shutoff feature, it seems that the motor and drive mechanisms are underbuilt and prone to failure if overloaded. On the upside, if your mixer happens to malfunction within a year of purchase (mine did after 2 weeks), Kitchenaid has great customer support and will replace the unit.
In short, it is a great mixer, but doesn't live up to the manufacture's promises.

This is a monster. The (semi) professional 600 Kitchen-aid comes with a cover over the bowl. I don't use it, it's flimsy and not handy. But without this cover on the bowl I have to warn you: Don't put your hand in the bowl while the machine is working, it will be torn off! So powerful is this Kitchen-aid.
That was the bad news. Goodies are that this thing will make your live a lot easier. Fast, strong, quick, easy handle etc. And the boeing 747-sound it makes when you put it on full throttle..... Sounds like music to me.
